MAAKUM Developmental Foundation today launched a free eye care camp for cataract surgery in Taiz Governorate, with support from PIOUS PROJECTS, funding from PURE HANDS, and coordination with the relevant local authorities.

The camp aims to provide 100 free cataract surgeries, along with the necessary medical consultations, screenings, and examinations. The initiative seeks to improve access to specialized eye care for vulnerable and underserved patients while easing the financial burden of treatment on them and their families.

The launch was attended by Dr. Elan Abdulhaq, Deputy Governor of Taiz for Health Affairs; Fouad Al-Faqih, Director General of the Office of Social Affairs and Labour in Taiz; Abdulqader Al-Muqrai, Director of the PURE HANDS Office in Taiz; and Yasser Aloshari, Executive Director of MAAKUM Developmental Foundation, along with government officials, medical professionals, and members of the project team.

During the launch, Dr. Elan Abdulhaq highlighted the importance of the camp in expanding access to quality healthcare services and supporting efforts to prevent avoidable blindness. She commended the contributions of the supporting and implementing partners and the participating medical teams, emphasizing the importance of sustaining health initiatives that serve the most vulnerable communities.

For his part, Fouad Al-Faqih stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships among government authorities, humanitarian organizations, and development institutions to deliver health and humanitarian interventions that respond to community needs and alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable groups.

Yasser Aloshari, Executive Director of MAAKUM Developmental Foundation, stated that the project responds to the growing need for ophthalmic and surgical eye care services, particularly among families unable to afford the cost of surgery. He expressed his appreciation for the support of PIOUS PROJECTS, the funding provided by PURE HANDS, and the cooperation of the relevant authorities in facilitating the project. He also reaffirmed MAAKUM’s commitment to continuing its health interventions for vulnerable and underserved communities.

In the same context, Mohammed Al-Haidari, Project Officer at the PURE HANDS Office in Taiz, explained that supporting the camp reflects the organization’s commitment to health and humanitarian interventions that deliver a direct and tangible impact, emphasizing the importance of partnerships with local institutions in ensuring that essential medical services reach those who need them most.

The project forms part of joint efforts to combat avoidable blindness, expand access to quality healthcare, restore sight, and improve the quality of life of beneficiaries.
