Media | MAAKUM On the morning of July 2, 2025, Mr. Abdulwasa Shadad, Director of the Education Office in Taiz Governorate, welcomed six students who won the Arab Reading Challenge at the national level, along with their parents, ahead of their departure from the governorate to the temporary capital, Aden. The students are heading to represent Yemen in the final international rounds of the competition, which will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This achievement comes as part of ongoing educational efforts and with the support and contribution of Ma’akum Developmental Foundation (MA’AKUM), which provided financial assistance and training programs for the participating students. During the reception, which was attended by Mr. Mohammed Al-Mashmar, Director of Al-Qahira District, along with a number of educational leaders, Mr. Abdulwasa Shaddad congratulated the outstanding students on this honorable achievement, expressing his pride in them and in their academic excellence, which brings honor to Taiz and to Yemen as a whole. He also extended his heartfelt congratulations to the students’ families, schools, and teachers, recognizing their significant role in supporting, encouraging, and inspiring the students to read, explore, and excel. The Director of the Education Office emphasized that conscious reading and continuous learning form the cornerstone for building a future generation capable of advancing society and confronting the challenges of the modern world. He called on all students to follow the example of their successful peers by making reading a daily habit and a tool for acquiring knowledge and developing their skills. He also praised the contribution of Ma’akum Developmental Foundation (MA’AKUM) for its sponsorship of talented students and its support for various educational programs and activities across several districts of the governorate. As part of the local community’s support for student talents, Ma’akum Developmental Foundation (MA’AKUM) provided each of the winning students with a financial grant of 100,000 Yemeni riyals. The foundation also expressed its readiness to sponsor specialized training and preparation programs to help the students achieve advanced rankings in the international finals. Dr. Abdulhamid Al-Yousifi emphasized that the role of development and civil society organizations must now go beyond humanitarian relief work, expanding to include sustainable development issues—particularly education in all its forms. He stressed the importance of supporting and empowering gifted and outstanding students to reach international platforms of recognition, affirming the belief that investing in human potential is the true wealth for shaping the future. He concluded by wishing all participating students a successful journey and achievements that reflect their aspirations and present a dignified image of Taiz and Yemen on regional and international stages. For his part, Mr. Abdelhakim Naji, Director of the School Activities Department at the Education Office, explained that supporting such initiatives falls within the framework of the department’s activity plan, which aims to develop students’ skills, nurture their talents, and build well-rounded personalities. He affirmed the department’s commitment to designing and implementing programs that promote a culture of reading and creativity among students across the governorate’s schools. In the same context, Ms. Intisar Al-Oudi, Head of the Activities and Gifted Students Unit at the Education Office, emphasized that the Gifted Students Unit works to identify and support talented students, providing them with the appropriate environment to develop their skills and enabling them to compete both locally and internationally. She added that this competition embodies the goals of the Activities Department and the Gifted Students Unit by fostering a spirit of excellence and creativity, and encouraging students to embrace reading and knowledge as tools for personal and societal advancement. It is worth noting that the national-level qualifiers in Yemen included the participation of 51 students representing the liberated governorates, and were conducted online under the supervision of a judging panel based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
